Protecting Your Life's Work

Fee Alternatives

Not all legal work is the same, yet the vast majority of law firms treat it all the same by billing every project for every client by the hour.  We are pleased to offer alternatives to fit each of our client's unique needs.

Flat or Fixed Fee

In both our corporate and estate planning practices, we frequently agree with our clients to handle a particular project or matter for a flat fee.  For example, absent truly extraordinary circumstances, preparation of Articles of Incorporation or a Power of Attorney for Health Care are always billed at a fixed fee.  This provides clients with cost certainty and, most importantly, removes the fear many clients have that they should not call their attorney because it will fatten their bill.  We value your input and want to communicate openly, without worrying how long the clock has been ticking.

For fixed fee arrangements, we will decide, together and in advance, what the exact scope of the service will be, what the exact cost for the service will be and by what deadline the service will be provided.  If we provide services beyond those in our agreed-upon scope of work, we will give you the option of agreeing to an expanded fee for expanded services, or billing you for those services in accordance with our customary hourly rate.

Retainer

Many clients prefer to have an attorney that they can call at any time, for any reason, with any question.  This valuable peace of mind lends itself to a retainer arrangement.  Under this type of fee structure, we will meet in advance and agree on a reasonable monthly fee that answers all your questions.  Every few months we will reassess the relationship and determine if the retainer, as it then stands, continues to be in the interests of both attorney and client or requires an adjustment.

Contingency Fees

In appropriate cases, we are happy to defer our bills and collect only a portion of what we recover on your behalf and whatever expenses we incur on your behalf.  We most often employ this type of billing with collections matters for business clients.

Hourly Billing

If none of our other alternatives fit your needs, we also offer traditional hourly billing.  Under this arrangement, we will keep meticulous records of all time spent on your project and bill you monthly for services rendered.
